5 Small Wellness Habits That Fit Into Real Life
When I first started my wellness journey, my focus was on losing weight and getting into the gym. Over time, I found that taking care of myself also lived in the smaller moments: making a meal, getting outside, and choosing what I could realistically keep doing.
These days, wellness shows up in different ways for me. Sometimes it’s a workout or time spent cooking. Other times, it’s a walk with Thor, reading a book, or giving myself a little room to slow down.
If you’re looking for a place to start, here are five small habits you can make your own.
1. Keep water within reach
Try putting a glass or reusable bottle somewhere you’ll naturally see it—beside your morning coffee, on your desk, or near your bag before you leave the house.
I like habits that fit into something I’m already doing. Keeping water nearby creates a simple reminder without turning it into another complicated task.
Start small: Set a glass of water beside your breakfast tomorrow.
2. Make one meal a little easier
You don’t have to plan every meal for the entire week. Start with the one that tends to feel rushed or leaves you wondering what to eat.
That might mean choosing a breakfast you can repeat, making an extra portion at dinner, or keeping a few ingredients ready for a quick bowl.
I enjoy meals with plenty of flavor, and I want the food I make to be something I look forward to. Think about a protein, a fruit or vegetable, and a satisfying carbohydrate you enjoy, then bring it together with your favorite seasonings or sauce.
Start small: Choose one easy meal for tomorrow and check that you have the ingredients.
3. Make room for a little movement
The gym has been a meaningful part of my journey, but walks with Thor are part of my routine, too. They give me a chance to step away from what I’m doing and spend some time outside.
Your version might be a short walk, gentle stretching, dancing while you tidy up, or a movement break between tasks. Choose something that works for your body and your day.
Start small: Set aside five or ten minutes for movement you enjoy.
4. Give yourself a moment to pause
It can be easy to fill every open minute with something productive. Try leaving a little space to check in with yourself.
Ask: What do I need right now? Maybe you’re hungry, ready for a break, or simply looking for a few quiet minutes.
For me, that pause might look like reading, journaling, or spending time with Thor. Yours can be just as simple. It doesn’t have to become an elaborate self-care routine.
Start small: Take five minutes away from your phone and choose something that feels restful.
5. Practice returning without starting over
There will be days when dinner is takeout, your plans change, or the workout doesn’t happen. Those moments are part of building habits in real life.
This is where “balance over perfection” matters most to me. You can make your next choice without treating the entire day or week as a failure.
If your original plan feels too big, make it smaller. A short walk, a simple meal, or preparing one thing for tomorrow can be enough to help you reconnect with your routine.
Start small: When a plan changes, ask, “What is one manageable thing I can do next?”
Pick one habit to begin
You don’t need to take on all five this week. Choose the one that would make your day a little easier, and give yourself time to see how it fits.
You’re allowed to adjust along the way. The routines you build should make room for your preferences, your responsibilities, and the life you want to enjoy.
